BLURB:

To save the Faery world and her mother’s life, seventeen year old Lorelei sacrificed everything, and the dangerous bargains she made in Nevermore had lasting repercussions. Now safely back in her own world, Lorelei seems the same to her high school friends and her supernatural boyfriend, despite the dark magic growing within her. Love across dimensions is complicated, especially when an invisible veil between the two worlds is sealing, threatening to separate Lorelei and Adrius forever.

Determined to find a solution, Lorelei resorts to exploring her new found powers. But when her friends fall ill, and her healing touch only makes things worse, Lorelei can’t help but wonder if she's responsible.

Nightmares from the Nevermore tighten their icy hold when someone arrives determined to destroy Lorelei’s world, starting with those closest to her. Once again she’s forced to choose between her family… her friends… and a love that was ill-fated from the start.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Stay. Just…. Stay.” The second I said it I felt awful. What was I asking? I knew he couldn’t stay, that he needed to return to his world to stay alive in mine.
Since the night of the dance we’d carefully stayed away from discussing our little predicament. We were still at a standoff. He couldn’t live in my world without magical aids to keep him alive, because of the toxic nature of our polluted air, and I couldn’t go back to his world, because of a bunch of angry beings trying to kill me. That left us here. He would have to return to his world and refuel, to come back to mine. How long the potions lasted depended upon how much stress he was under. Physical exertion, extreme emotions all used up the reserve more quickly. Then there was the issue of his still being tied to Venus, the daughter of the ice witch I killed. A curse had caused his forced fealty to her. Killing the witch was not only supposed to save Mythlandria from her destructive wrath, it was also supposed to free Adrius of the curse that bound him to the ice witch’s commands. Who knew there was a daughter who would take over the bonds, and that she was also his ex-girlfriend.
Now she wants me dead in payment for killing her mother, and as a bonus, I’d be out of the way so she could get Adrius back in her life. That he could come here at all means the curse is weakening. I want his freedom, but at which price? Was I willing to kill for it? I’d have to end her life as well if I was going to destroy the bonds. And I wasn’t a killer. Even Octăhvia’s death was more of an accident than intended. I had no idea what awakening the magic would do, or how to wield it. This arrangement seemed like our only option, for now. And while I hated to see him leave, there was something comforting in being able to pretend that my life was normal again. As normal as it ever was. I could enjoy being back home with friends and back at school which surprisingly enough, I’d missed. It’s amazing how coming to the edge of your life multiple times will make even the most mundane routines a welcomed change.
“Think about what you’re asking me,” he said. “You know why I have to leave.”
He watched me suck in a breath of regret, as I wished I could take back my self-serving plea.
Pain creased his eyes. “Sleep soundly, Lorelei,” was all he said. He kissed the top of my head and turned to go.
The tense set of his jaw revealed the effort it took to leave. I watched him walk away, biting down on my lower lip until he reached the driveway.
“How am I supposed to sleep?” My voice was almost too quiet to be heard over the howling wind. But his hearing surpassed most mortal’s.
“Warm milk with honey works well,” he answered my whisper, his back still facing me. “It helps with the night terrors too,” he added.
“You know that’s not what I meant.” I moved closer, descending one step at a time until my bare feet hit the cold of the pavement.
Adrius froze. Electric pulses crackled between us.
“I was talking about sleeping without you. Here.”
“You’ve managed to do it before,” he said cautiously, the strain of his resolve vibrating in his voice.
“I know. But—“
This was wrong. It was selfish. How could I ask him to stay, when I know that leaving is what would keep him alive to return to me?
“I’m sorry. I’m being silly. It’s just I can’t—“
With whipcrack intensity, his resolve burned away and he rushed toward me and pulled me into his arms. His touch burned though my shirt as his hands splayed against my back, pressing us closer. He kissed me, hungrily at first, then it quickly deepened to ravenous. Matching his fervor, I tangled my fingers in his hair. Every inch of me was on fire. He gasped, his lips slowing against mine. By the time we separated, we were both breathless. He leaned his forehead against mine for a few rapid heartbeats, then pulled back. Our eyes remained locked in a palpitating stretch of silence that spoke volumes. My head swirled, and all I wanted was more of where we’d left off.
But he read my intentions. The corners of his lips quirked and he shook his head. Warm hands slid down my arms with one last caress, before he disappeared. Gone so quickly I didn’t actually see him leave. Swallowed by the darkness of the night and the forest that held the secret doorway into Mythlandria.
YA FANTASY BOOK BLITZ
Grit of Berth and Stone
by Lisa Dunn
Release Date: 03/17/15
Anaiah Press
256 pages
Summary from Goodreads:
Banished for a foolish mistake, sixteen-year-old Grit of Berth and Stone scorns the loss of her home, her honor, and her only ally. Only the weak worry about such things.
But war is brewing all across Chasmaria, and as a group of rebels pull Grit into their ranks, she begins to question what strength, courage, and honor really look like. When faced with a horrible truth about herself, Grit must either fight her way back to Thresh or live with the blood of the innocent on her hands.
Excerpt:
Grit swirled the cider in her mug while the bartender filled mugs for other customers. A dameling, perhaps sixteen or seventeen years of age, slid onto the stool on the other side of Grit. The dameling’s long, golden curls were tied back with a bright pink ribbon. Clear blue eyes and delicate pink lips adorned her round, youthful face.
“May I have a juice, barkeep?” Her voice was as innocent as her smile. She took her mug of juice from the barkeep and turned to Grit. Her eyes widened in amazement when she saw Grit’s pearl. “What is that round your neck?”
Grit took a swig of cider. “It’s a pearl.”
“Where did you get it?” The girl squinted for a closer look at the orb.
Remembering Dagger’s warning to reveal nothing of herself, Grit straightened her back and chose her words carefully. “An ally gave it to me as security for a future service.”
The girl sat back, her pink lips drawn into a frown. “It must be quite a service for your ally to have given you such a magnificent pledge.”
“It’s nothing much.” Grit shrugged her shoulders and stared into her mug. Eventually, the girl would have to lose interest in the pearl.
The girl leaned closer. “Its surface looks so smooth.” Her voice cracked as she reached a hand out to touch Grit’s pearl.
Thornton Berry Shire Press is proud (and sad) to be hosting the final book tour from Fire and Ice Virtual Book Tours…Shelly is a gem to work with.  And what a way to go…with an International Book Award Winner!   The Unholy, by Paul DeBlassie III is obviously not for our typical young adult audience here at TBS, however, we wanted to share a story based in the "New Age" genre of paranormal and see if you might be interested in something different…so, let us know what you think about The Unholy.  You'll get your chance to own a copy by adding your name to the rafflecopter at the bottom of this post, for a $25 GC.
So good luck and thx for stopping by TBS.
Blurb:
A young curandera, a medicine woman, intent on uncovering the secrets of her past is forced into a life-and-death battle against an evil Archbishop. Set in the mystic land of Aztlan, “The Unholy” is a novel of destiny as healer and slayer. Native lore of dreams and visions, shape changing, and natural magic work to spin a neo-gothic web in which sadness and mystery lure the unsuspecting into a twilight realm of discovery and decision.
Excerpt:
Help me? Help yourself! Face what is yours to face,” Elizabeth hissed. She yanked the door open then forced it to slam behind her.
Claire stood still for a moment, feeling as if a tornado had swept through the room. Elizabeth’s demand had left her shaken. She drew a deep breath, then went to her desk and picked up her tea, noticing her trembling hands.
Turning toward the window, Claire saw a muscular orderly accompanying Elizabeth to the locked ward at the far end of the hospital compound. A flock of crows circled high overhead, seeming to follow the two receding figures. As they arrived at the outer doors of the locked unit, the orderly reached for his keys. The crows circled while the two crossed the threshold of the unit, Elizabeth suddenly pausing, turning, and looking outside, her gaze riveted on the flock of birds.
All but two flew off, disappearing into the piÃąon-covered hills. The two that remained came to rest on the red brick wall adjacent to the locked unit, their black eyes boring into Elizabeth. She looked panicked then enraged and, shaking a finger at the creatures, yelled something. Her frantic gestures told Claire that she was screeching curses to ward off evil.
Claire took a step back from the window, from the impact of Elizabeth’s rage.
The orderly grabbed Elizabeth roughly by the arm and pulled her inside.
The crows waited, watched, then flew away.
BOOK TWO IN THE ANNUM GUARD SERIES…REVIEW
Ahhhhhh!!!  It just stops!  Seriously, the book simply stops right at a twisty intriguing episode where you turn the page as quickly as you can and…what? that's it?…damn you Meredith!!
Well, she's done it again.  This book picks up exactly where the first one leaves us and doesn't let up for one moment….none of this disappointing lag, or loss of momentum second book let down sort of stuff.  She keeps the tempo top notch.
The writing is clever as well as informative…with some very interesting flipping in the re-telling of some monumental events in history….this is time travel at it's best.  Very well thought out.   The characters are well written and I simply adore the gutsy yet vulnerable lead character.  I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves a good paced, action, intrigue, young adult protagonist with a bit of smarts thrown in for good measure kind of story.
Here's a link to the cover and review we did of the first book The Eighth Guardian http://www.benjaminmctish.blogspot.com/2015/02/outstanding-read.html
And I'd advise you to click on both these links below and get on board with the Annum Guard Series
My Apologies
I just wanted to chime in here for a quick moment and extend my apology for the lapse in timely communications.  As anyone who follows knows, I keep fairly current on sharing as much as possible.
The past couple months my life has changed dramatically with the addition of my father in law…almost 96…moving into our home.  If anyone has taken care of an elderly, or someone who needed round the clock physical support, you know just how much energy this takes.  I gladly took on this challenge, along with my husband, and we are extremely grateful we were able to give our father this loving care.
Unfortunately, he passed, very unexpectedly,  last week, and has left us in sheer shock with a tremendous feeling of loss.   We are attempting to put our feelings of "what do we do now with our time?" and the lonely days in order now. The silence is deafening…. Family has come and gone with the last of them as of today, and we feel the quiet profoundly!
Please bare with me as I regain my sense of daily work again over this coming month.  I am looking forward to sharing some new authors with you, along with updates on my own work.  My calendar will be full once again, so keep your eyes open for that update in the sidebar.
I thank all of you who follow along with us here at Thornton Berry Shire Press…June
Share the Love Blog Hop
So here's a new twist on the book blog hop….We're Sharing the Love this week and surprise bombing bloggers and authors we adore with a little love! Hop by all of the blogs for chances to win great prizes at each stop and find out which authors and bloggers we think are so darn special! …..how's that for sharing the love!
Once again, our incomparable hostess with the mostess, Anna, from Herding Cats and Burning Soup has  outdone herself with this one.
And my gift for one person who hits the follow on both  blog and twitter for one of these amazing blogs/authors, is your pick of one of their books…just let me know who you choose, and why, and what your book pick is, and leave a comment with your email and voila!  Gift two and three will be an ebook to two other winners who do the same.
So here are my five top favorites today….hope you discover for yourself why they make the cut!
(just click on the name of the blog or person to link…or the word here in some cases)
Number One on my list of favorites is YA Fantasy/Adventure Author Kristen Taber.  Her Aerenden Series is making some waves.  She was nominated for several Indie awards this past year for the first book in the series, The Child Returns.  I, myself, could not put this book down, it grabs you instantly and finishes with some strong emotion.  I suggest you take a look for yourself, you won't be disappointed.  Here's a post we did that has a pretty extensive synopsis into all three books, check it out.  Kristen is currently working on the fourth book.
Number Two belongs to one of my old standards, Stephanie Greenhalgh blog or web…check out both, they're very different... who was one of the first authors I ever interviewed, check out that post here, it's a really great insight into the Author.  She gives us a great paranormal ya twist on an old standard in the first of the series…The Truly Twisted Tale of Ruby Hood…again, another fun read that is inventive and well written.
Number Three is not not an author, however, I visit this blog on a regular basis…that's because they are so utterly informative and keep up with both books and movies on a daily basis.  GREAT sense of humor and cleverly written posts…you won't be disappointed following this dynamic duo known as
I Smell Sheep…I know…but it works!  They cover all genre's of story and are right on top of their game…sign up to follow them!!
Number Four and Five…here's a gal I met on Wordpress through a bunch of guys over at Prose Before Ho Hos…which I'm shamelessly adding into this round.  They are all guys, they write flash fiction, weird wild west zombie stuff that is freaking awesome…and I'm not even into zombies..but the stuff is so well written it's mind boggling. A monthly serial called Whiskey and Wheelguns,  you may remember I did a book cover for one of the authors, Alex Nadar,(visit his personal site)  see the cover here…and here's a link to his new novella combining the four monthly installments of Possessed, which I highly recommend ...that and they write articles about the male perspective in writing, very fun and extremely well written.…but we're here because of Jessica West…you've just got to go over and meet her to see why I follow on a regular basis…she's an amazing writer,  great witty stuff…she does several genres, flash fiction as well, works with the boys at Prose,  however, she and her partner Pavarti K. Tyler were just signed to Hot Ink Press, in case you're wondering, yes, its everything you think it is…and if you follow Herding Cats, then this new series is bound to "tie up" your interest…yes, I made a pun…it's called SIN EATERS…so head on over asap...you can't go wrong with either of these blogs.
BLURB:
In a world where cities float, airships sail the skies and mythical creatures are summoned in a pinch, Celes Vale is distinctly average. Living in the shadow of his talented cousin and his powerful aunt and uncle, Celes is resigned to a future of soot, factories and well, more soot.
But on the night of his twelfth birthday everything changes. A blinding light, a whispered voice and in an instant Celes becomes the first ordinary child in history to develop magic, sending him on a fast-track ticket to the greatest of the floating cities, Gardarel. Boasting grand, elegant buildings wrought from shimmering white stone, the entire city appears as though it has been built from light, and so it has come to be called the Kingdom Lights.
Though some welcome Celes, others want the dirt-ridden up-start off their city preferably head first. Nowhere is this clearer than in the attitude and actions of the beautiful and haughty Lady Ban and her sneering nephew, Marcus Blackwood. But Blackwood, with his gang of goons and unimaginative one-liners, is soon the least of Celes s problems.
With a little magic and a lot of detective work, Celes and his group of Scurriers and Wisps unravel the dark truth behind Lady Ban s prim, perfect smile an alliance to the villainous Wardens and the masked man who leads them. However, in his attempt to expose Lady Ban, Celes unwittingly stumbles onto an even darker conspiracy a plan that could lead to the complete destruction of Gardarel itself.
EXCERPT
With his immaculately polished shoes, carefully preened suit and even more carefully preened moustache Jaime Milton was the last person one would expect in the sooty factory city of Midgard. His father, Lord Milton, Sr., a great wobbly man with fat flapping fingers like purple bananas was a close second.
It was a brilliant June morning and the city of Floating City of Midgard was alight with life. Jaime walked through the weathered cobblestone streets and watched as houses flung their windows and doors open, lapping in the sunlight. Jaime had not been here for two years and yet the City of Factories was exactly as he had remembered; there were rows of homes huddled together, tightly packed into the little street as high rising billows of smoke sailed into the sky. The cobblestones of rose-tinged granite underfoot were boisterous and uneven and Jaime had to be extra careful so as not to fall over as racing children zoomed past, chasing one another furiously through the street. Some were covered in soot whilst others were rosy clean but, he noted, all were breathless.
Jaime Milton couldn’t help but smile.
“What are you smirking about?” barked Lord Milton, Sr. as his son pushed him through the streets in a beautiful silvery wheelchair.
“Just thinking about the first time I came to Midgard,” replied Jaime. “It was a…”
“I didn’t ask!” announced Lord Milton, Sr., brandishing his polished walking cane. “Always answering questions I didn’t ask! And stop your smiling! There’s no reason to smile!”
Beautiful Cover by the way….
My Thoughts….
First of all, I'm nearly finished, my Kindle says I'm 70% done with the book…so I have a good feeling for what is going on.  And the main thing I wish to comment on first and foremost is this.
I've read quite a few times already on other reviews that most people find the parallel with Harry Potter to be a big mark against the story.  That it's not original and too similar…?  I have to tell you that I must be the only person who never ONCE picked up on Harry Potter in the least, nothing in this story takes me there or brings him to mind.  Having said this, I can see where if you are picking things apart and comparing the idea that a 12 year old boy finds out he has magic, goes to a school for magic where he is bullied but has a couple misfit friends, and has to fend off the evil sorcerer, then I suppose the comparison could be drawn.  However, for me, I just started reading and the "feeling" that comes from Harry Potter did not come up for me in the least, so the comparison, along with the apparent disappointment, never came in this regard.
The second thing that I'd like to point out is that this book is marketed as a steampunk fantasy….again, other than the floating cities, which is a hugely terrific idea, there has been no steampunk edge to the story whatsoever, which for me, was very disappointing.  I was looking for something magical in the floating city idea, and that's pretty much as far as it goes.
I also see people commenting on the current time of the story and the language.  Again, I never picked up that it was anywhere near our current time.  The story is written in the Victorian flavor of language, more proper English and words that suit a period piece, which is probably why it is labeled steampunk, as that would fit into that world.  I took it as a fantastical, other worldly kind of tale…nothing to do with today.  If anything, future maybe…but the beginning in particular reminded me of Renaissance feeling with the street markets and cobblestone…so there's that.  I actually loved this style of writing.
I really enjoy the main character, Celes, which is the main reason I have continued to read this story…..I truly wish to discover what really will happen to him.  For me, it wasn't as simple as "on his twelfth birthday he discovered he had magic and went to school to learn more"….this isn't what happened at all actually.
The story is very confusing in the beginning, too many things going on.  This happened throughout the book for me I must admit.  But the overlying story kept my attention.
The truth is that some kind of magical "myst" "fog", energy, enveloped the boy and gave him the choice to accept the gift of magic, at his own risk of course.  This deal was made and the magical mysterious being that gave him this power doesn't come back into the story to explain anything….at least not 70% through.  He ventures off to this other city to learn his craft and the bulk of the story involves everything else BUT this.  I kept thinking…when is he going to learn magic or cast a spell or something, what is the point of this whole story?
The friends are fun, the bad guys predictable and the hero…well, like I said, so far the hero is a very enjoyable character.
Some things are very elementary, as would be fitting of a middle grade tale, yet there is a very confusing thread running through the story that makes me believe a nine year old might get very lost…unless they are just in it for the fun and surface reading, they may be able to skim over these advancing story lines that never actually seem to play out to anything…it's like a dozen starts to an adventure and I read to get to a conclusion or a twist or turn in the road, hope there's magic already, and then it just keeps going….no pay off.
So I shall continue to read this story and see if by the end anything changes for me…one would hope!  The ending better take me somewhere, or I'm afraid it's just been a decent story with one note running through, no peaks or valleys or intrigue.  But I'm a grown up,  a kid might discover the magic…let's hope for the best.
I'll post my full review on Goodreads and Amazon as soon as I finish, which should be during the next week.
Remember, these are just my thoughts for now….thx for listening.
RUINATION by Amanda Thome
"It’s only a fraction of a second but in that moment I see the life leave his eyes. I realize the gravity of what I’ve done. I’ve just killed a man. I killed someone’s son, maybe some-one’s father.
The gunfire to my left closes in and snaps me back to reality. I string the second arrow. I have a clear shot but I can’t take it. I won’t take another life even if it means dying.
Suddenly a veil of absolute darkness falls over me and my body feels like it’s plunged into an icy bath. My ears strain to hear but I no longer perceive the sound of gunshots from the foreigners."
